I am a husband, father, educator, coach, and author who loves all things sports and American history. I currently serve as the Head Baseball Coach and AP Government teacher at Sparkman High School in Harvest, Alabama. I am also a member of the West Huntsville Church of Christ, where I oversee the college work and serve on the Missions Committee.
With more than thirteen years of experience in education, I strive to build strong relationships, foster high expectations, and create cultures of accountability and excellence. My work in the classroom emphasizes critical thinking, civic responsibility, and learning how to think, not what to think. My leadership on the baseball field focuses on discipline, competing, teamwork, and servant leadership.
Above all else, I am a husband and father. My wife, Linzee, is the rock in my life who inspires me to be the best man I can be, both for her and our children. My children (Billy Mac and Annie Gayle) are my constant reminder to be an example they can aspire to.
It is my goal to do everything in this life through a biblical worldview. I do my best to apply this to each of my conversations and actions, including both in the classroom and on the baseball diamond. It is always my goal to be genuine in my faith in all things.
There are several rules that I strive to live by. Perhaps it is ironic that there are 9 of them, as there are innings in a baseball game.
Make good choices
This is simple enough. As much as possible, strive to make good choices. You'll never regret a decision that brings you closer to God.
Return your shopping cart
This is a basic principle of being a good person. Take the time do return what you have taken. Don't rely on others to do your work for you. Above all else, don't be lazy.
Be a two percenter
I read somewhere that only two percent of people choose to take the stairs when an elevator is available. Ultimately, those two percent of people choose the hard course when an easier one is presented. Challenge yourself when it's easy not too.
Work to Obtain
You deserve what you work to obtain, but you don't always get what you deserve. Work in order to obtain what you desire, but don't act in a way as if you deserve it just because you worked hard. You'll never get what you want without working for it, but that doesn't mean it's owed to you.
Be Well Read
If you can learn to read, you can teach yourself anything in the world. Reading fosters the desire to learn and grow. To broaden your vocabulary and your knowledge of any given subject. Read fiction and let your imagination run wild. Read non-fiction and learn things from different perspectives you've never known before.
Have a Firm Center and Soft Edges
The goal should never be to be offensive, but you also must not change the truth to avoid offense. Know where your convictions come from. Be diligent in defending them, but share the truth in love. Listen and work to understand different points of view. Find out where those viewpoints come from. Debate and discuss. Allow it to help you grow in your knowledgeof the subject. Listening is not necessarily acceptance. Don't change your views simply because your don't want to hurt feelings, but never broach a subject with that goal in mind.
N.EX.T.
This is something that we say within my baseball program often. When both good and bad things happen to you in this life, Notice them, EXhale, and Transition. Don't dwell too long on the bad, or you will never be able to overcome them. Don't dwell too long on the good, or you will be humbled quickly.
Be Hard to Kill
This is another motto of our baseball program. Compete in all things. Don't give up when things get hard and when things are not going your way. Be a tough out, all the time. Train your physical body in a way that is worthy of how fearfully and wonderfully made we are. Train your spiritual body to be able to overcome the second death.
Veritas Lux
Truth and Light. These two are forever connected. The truth is the light of the world. Let it guide you in all things. As the truth is the light, we are called to be lights also. We do this by sharing His truth with others. Let His light shine before men.
